We've been rolling out the YouTube Shorts beta to help bring the joy of short-form video to YouTube, and the joy of YouTube to short-form video. It's now available to everyone in India and the U.S., and we've already seen many creative, awesome Shorts from our community. Since Shorts is a new way to watch and create on YouTube, we've been taking a fresh look at what it means to monetize and reward creators for their content. To state the obvious, people like to engage with different videos throughout the day. For instance, someone may scroll through TikTok during their lunch break but then play a 2-hour long podcast on YouTube when they get home.
Even in its most basic beta form, the Shorts feature saw solid performance in India. In March 2021, less than a year later, the Shorts beta was fully released in the U.S., quickly surpassing 6.5 billion daily views. By July 2021, Shorts officially launched globally in over 100 countries.
Many of these businesses operate predominantly in cash, balance their books with a paper and pen or manage inventory using personal judgment. Helping shopkeepers — many of whom are without the resources to perform deep research or analytics — track and systematize these processes can have massive impacts on their bottom line. The report stated that there could be a 60% to 100% increase in corner shop profits were they to implement effective fintech solutions. The biggest potential increase in profits comes with banking providers, who can increase store profits 20% to 60% if they decrease the cost of credit.
In addition to bringing vertical videos to the living room, YouTube has also planned a number of other features for its TV app. The service's Android TV and Google TV apps are supposed to get stability and performance improvements, and YouTube Music will gain additional features on smart TVs as well. These will include the ability to browse playlists and albums, add them to one's library directly from the TV screen and more.
That's not to say it's a cut-and-dried task, though. The puzzle of how to set up a mapping algorithm for driving is relatively simple compared to doing so for biking. Estimating roughly how long it will take to drive somewhere requires little more than knowing speed limits and whether or not intersections have stop signs or stop lights. For biking, though, finding the "right" route is a lot more qualitative.
Google has yet to reveal its fall hardware lineup — the company has an event scheduled for Oct. 6 — but leaks suggest it will include an HD-only version of its Chromecast streaming adapter, which Protocol was first to report on in January. In Europe, the device will reportedly cost 40% below the current price of its Chromecast 4K sibling. If Google uses the same pricing in the U.S., it may sell its new Chromecast HD for as little as $30.
Sonos has since introduced several lower-priced products, including both its new Sub Mini and its entry-level Ray soundbar. However, the Ray also showed that this strategy of focusing on lower-end devices only goes so far. Sales of the device were "significantly missing our expectations," admitted Sonos CEO Patrick Spence during the company's most recent earnings call.
